When Dr. Lepaine Sharp-McHenery was growing up, her mother always dreamed of her being a nurse. After witnessing the impact of nursing firsthand, Dr. Lepaine knew in her heart she was meant for the job. Throughout her career, Dr. Lepaine has had the pleasure of working hands-on with thousands of patients to bring them top-of-the-line care. In recent years, Dr. Lepaine’s passion for nursing has led her to take on a new role as the Dean at Simmons University, where she helps mold students into future nurses.
According to Dr. Lepaine, one of the biggest challenges she sees in higher education is a lack of preparation, and unfortunately, many students step onto a college campus not knowing what truly awaits them. While academic skills are certainly important, Dr. Lepaine explains that the profession of nursing also requires excellent communication, so it is crucial that students are well-rounded. To better ensure the success of her students in both school and the workforce, Dr. Lepaine emphasizes the importance of mentorship. Each of her students gets the opportunity to work side-by-side with real industry professionals, which allows them to develop a deep understanding of what it means to truly be a nurse.
Tune into this week’s episode of Southern Soul Live Stream for a conversation about the nursing profession. Learn more about the barriers to healthcare access, the impact of mentorship, and the importance of diversifying the profession, so we can work towards providing equitable healthcare for all.

“Conquering Diabetes”: Disrupting The Landscape of Adult-Onset Diabetes
Thursday Feb 10, 2022
Thursday Feb 10, 2022
For most of his life, D.J. Jones struggled to maintain a healthy lifestyle. After being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, nearly losing his eyesight, and suffering a stroke, D.J. knew he had a choice to make: change or die. It wasn’t until D.J. realized that most of what he knew about dieting was not true that he began to see real change. Today, D.J. is living diabetes-free and is committed to helping others disrupt the landscape of adult-onset diabetes to lead happy, healthy lives.
According to D.J., one in three Americans is either diabetic or pre-diabetic. This is largely due to the culture America has adopted around eating. Not only do we eat high levels of sugar and carbohydrates, but many of the healthy alternatives sold to us are filled with chemicals that cause disease. Like most people, D.J. thought his diabetes diagnosis was a chronic life-long condition. After properly educating himself, D.J. learned that the disease could actually be reversed by reframing his lifestyle. Not only did D.J. lose weight, lower his blood pressure, and get rid of his diabetes, but he has also been the catalyst for change in his family.
Tune into this week’s episode of Southern Soul Live Stream for an honest conversation about the diabetes epidemic. Learn more about the science behind diabetes, the truth behind diet culture, and the importance of making positive lifestyle choices, so you can prevent disease and increase your quality of life.
Quotes
• “Diabetes is not a chronic progressive condition. You can control it and you can turn it around by changing your lifestyle.” (05:50-06:03)
• “I believe that one of the reasons I was put here on this earth is to be what I like to call a wounded healer. All of the struggles and things that I've gone through, God is using to provide deliverance for other people.” (10:02-10:18)
• “The received wisdom that we get from the medical profession, tells us. things that are counterproductive to having a healthy life.” (12:21:12:30)
• “The things that I thought I was doing to help myself were actually serving as a hindrance.” (17:45-17:51)
• “Too many Americans have long lifespans but don’t have good health spans. They take a bunch of pills in order to keep them alive, but those pills don't help give them a good quality of life.” (24:03-24:16)
• “More than 120 million people in this country alone are either diabetic or pre-diabetic.” (24:24-24:30)
• “If your mama and your doctors aren’t giving you good advice, after a while you will give in to the messages that you're inundated with from the people who want to sell you tacos, burgers, pizza, and fried chicken.” (42:21-42:45)
• “Don't preach to your family because they are going to tune you out. You just have to be an avatar for the change you want to see happen with your family.” (43:34-43:45)
• “A standard serving of soda used to be a nine-ounce can. And then it went to 12 ounces. And now most places when you go to get a meal, they serve your soda in a container that is as big as 48 ounces.” (47:27-47:52)

“As a community, we have to be aware, we have to advocate for each other and ourselves, and we have to ask the hard questions, so we can empower ourselves,” says Dr. Gloria T. Anderson. It wasn’t until the pandemic struck that healthcare disparities became a popular topic of discussion. To better advocate for her friends and family, Dr. Gloria T. Anderson has taken her brand digital. With the help of her daughter and marketing expert, Tracee T. Holloway, Dr. Gloria is able to effectively spread awareness about healthcare and the black community. In today’s episode, the mother-daughter duo discusses how they are advocating for healthcare equity one brand at a time.
Tracee discovered her love for brand identity by helping her mother build her brand as a public speaker. Throughout her experience, Tracee has realized that the best way to spread awareness about your brand is online. In fact, Tracee explains that social media makes up 75% of the exposure your business will receive. To help her mother achieve her mission, Tracee has focused heavily on creating strategies to build a credible and authentic online presence. Together, this mother-daughter duo has been able to provide culturally relevant and credible information about health care that empowers their communities to better advocate for themselves and their loved ones.

Vegan Life, Plant-Based Nutrition, Personal Fitness, and Holistic Life Coaching
Thursday Jan 27, 2022
Thursday Jan 27, 2022
When many people think about their health and fitness goals, they imagine losing weight. While maintaining a healthy weight is a sign of a healthy lifestyle, it is just one aspect of a much larger picture. In today’s episode, host DJ D-Rich sits down with four experts to discuss veganism and what it means to live a holistic and healthy life.
First and foremost, it is crucial to understand wellness as a multi-dimensional concept. For most people, their desire to lose weight is unachievable because they are focused on counting calories rather than making sustainable lifestyle changes. Whether it be lack of motivation at work, emotional eating, environmental factors, or even economic status, it is important to understand what area of your life is prohibiting you from reaching your fitness goals. It isn’t until all the areas of wellness are aligned that you will be able to see real results.
Tune into this week’s episode of Southern Soul Livestream for an in-depth conversation about health and fitness. Learn more about the eight dimensions of wellness, the role of a life coach, and the effectiveness of plant-based nutrition, so you can be healthy physically, mentally, and spiritually.
Quotes
• “I want my clients to get to where they're enjoying life so much that food is really just fuel and what they do with their lives is a space where they're getting fit.” (05:19-05:32 | Shawnta)
• “I started off as a health coach and then I knew I needed to get a certification as a life coach because it wasn't just about the food, it really had so much more to do about how we're living our lives and whether or not we are happy with what we are doing every day.” (07:26-07:41 | Kimberly)
• “Most of weight management is so much deeper than just calorie counting and getting on the scale. Those things can help, but that's not going to solve the real problem.” (09:07-09:15 | Shawnta)
• “I want to show people you can still eat well on a vegan diet.” (30:07-30:11 | Erin)
• “The first thing you really need to do is change your mindset about food because if you go into it thinking I'm going to be vegan that means I can't have this or I can't have that, you create a restricted mindset and it's going to be really hard to keep it up.” (42:05-42:19 | Natalie)

Passing the Torch: Youth Leadership with Community Impact featuring Aseel and Hadiza
Thursday Jan 13, 2022
Thursday Jan 13, 2022
Being raised by immigrant parents, Aseel Mansour and Hadiza Sarr understand the importance of hard work and academic enrichment. While both Aseel and Hadiza are grateful for the opportunities in America, they are also aware of the many things that need to be done to ensure equitable education for all students. In today’s episode, Aseel and Hadiza discuss the importance of youth leadership within their communities.
As board members for the non-profit organization Family Connection Communities in Schools, Aseel and Hadiza were asked to answer a challenging question: what needs to change in schools? Rather than replying with their own thoughts, Aseel and Hadiza decided to get answers from students themselves. After surveying over 120 students in local elementary, middle and high schools, the girls realized the students' complaints were similar to theirs. According to Aseel and Hadiza, it is important for students to have a say in what happens at school as it encourages self-advocacy and directly impacts their future successes. When adults provide a safe space for children to express themselves, it allows for students of all kinds to flourish.
Tune into this week’s episode of Southern Soul Livestream for a conversation about the importance of youth leadership. Learn more about how students, teachers and administrators can work together to instill change that effectively brings academic enrichment and progress to schools across the nation.
Quotes
• "When we went to interview the middle schoolers about what they would have wanted to change in elementary school, a lot of them were saying smaller class sizes, more field trips, and academic competitions.” (06:43-06:55 | Aseel)
• “The sad thing about our district is that change comes with a lot of push, and it's not just us talking. It has to be us and all the people that come after us.” (07:42-07:55 | Hadiza)
• “I have seen what it is like on the other side of the world and I've seen the lack of opportunities. So I need to take advantage of what I have here and what I have now.” (10:51-11:01 Hadiza)
• “The more I learned, the more I learned to be outspoken about the things that I really care about.” (17:26-17:31 | Hadiza)
• “I think teachers and the people that we meet that are older than us are so quick to put us in boxes.” (29:22-29:29 | Hadiza)
• “The best adults that I've seen are the people that celebrate me, uplift me, connect me to others and allow me to flourish.” (30:47-30:59 | Hadiza)

Dr. Baucum is a professor who teaches marketing-focused courses to undergraduates and Master of Business Administration (MBA) students. She specializes in working with businesses and organizations that either are owned by black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) and/or serve BIPOC. Dr. Baucum conducts quantitative research focused on understanding how brand symbols influence the consumption behaviors and habits of BIPOC.
The pursuit of PhD excellence begins the moment you choose to apply to your program and continues until you walk across the stage at your graduation ceremony, and beyond! In this episode, we speak with Dr. Natalie Baucum about her experience obtaining her doctorate and how she uses this experience to support BIPOC students who are making the same journey in their own lives.
Being a woman in STEM and getting over imposter syndrome (IS)Impostor syndrome is a term coined by two American psychologists, Pauline Rose Clance and Suzanne Imes. In 1978 they were the first to study the phenomenon in high-achieving women. As such, it is also known as the impostor phenomenon (IP). Women affected by IP experience persistent feelings of intellectual fraudulence. This feeling can affect their academic or professional careers, their self-perception, and their interactions with others (for example students). They have an intense fear that if other people know about their true level of ability, that they will no longer be seen as successful. It has been suggested that the frequency at which impostorism affects women makes it both a significant and understudied problem for girls' achievement. Although the majority of research into the topic has focused on women, IS does not appear to be gender-specific; prevalence amongst men has been reported too. Additionally, the concept is increasingly being used to describe a broader range of experiences than originally defined by Clance and Imes. Studies indicate that between 70% and 95% of all people have experienced the impostor phenomenon sometime during their lives. It has been found to impact school performance, work productivity, interpersonal relationships, job satisfaction and mental health.
Getting involved in social justice issues while pursuing your PhDWe often feel that our PhD work is a solitary enterprise, but it doesn’t have to be. In fact, your academic work can inspire others. It can make a difference in the lives of your peers and colleagues in the university community as well as people outside of it. However, getting involved isn’t something you do on the side; social justice issues are very much intertwined with the process of being a scholar. Getting involved isn’t just an extra-curricular activity—it’s integral to who we are as academics and members of society.
Dealing with being Black in academia and facing racism in your department/thesis committeeBeing a person of color in academia is an experience unlike any other. In fact, it can be summed up in one word: racism. This experience varies greatly from individual to individual, yet all POC share some similar struggles when entering a predominantly white academic environment. One of the most difficult aspects is dealing with racism as an integral part of your university experience. Oftentimes, issues pertaining to race are never discussed or acknowledged for fear that people would think less of you for being Black/Latino/Asian/Gay/Transgender (insert identity here). However, how do we address problems in our communities if they aren’t acknowledged? If you are pursuing a PhD in the Sciences or Engineering, chances are your department or thesis committee is predominantly white. How then do you deal with being black in academia and facing racism in your department/thesis committee? Here is my personal approach based on my own experiences and observations as a black woman who has been involved in higher education for over a decade. It may not work for everyone, but perhaps sharing these insights might help others deal with their unique situation.
At SouthernSoulLiveStream.com - Show & Music Hangout we cover a variety of topics, this week we’re hosting an episode for scholars, researchers, students, academics, and lifelong learners.

A women’s ministry leader shares her path to becoming a marriage coach and the advice she gives women in her wives' bible study. Listen as she describes the difficulties she encountered along the way and how they have made her better at coaching others. You’ll also hear an honest, sincere, and down-to-earth conversation with our special guest as she shares her path and approach to a healthier marriage. In this episode you will learn:
What is biblical coaching and training for wives? - We need training in how to encourage and exhort one another day by day. Paul said, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Biblical coaching is a powerful way to help wives fulfill their potential.
What about women’s ministries that seem to perpetuate and promote a husband’s expectation of his wife’s subservience? - Imagine if we taught our girls from a young age that it’s not about serving their husbands; it’s about living out their own destinies as created by God for His glory! That is at least one way we can change the culture for our daughters and granddaughters.
What does healthy communication look like? - We need to speak into our relationships, and we also need to listen. If a couple is struggling with communication, they should first look inward: how can they become better listeners? Do they interrupt each other too much? Are there things that trigger defensiveness in them? We can’t expect others to change if we’re not willing to look at our own behaviors and attitudes. With that said, healthy communication goes both ways.

Navigating the High School to College Transition with Dr. Rudy Jackson Jr
Sunday Dec 26, 2021
Sunday Dec 26, 2021
As parents and caregivers, we put so much energy into helping our children become academically successful. We push for the right teachers, the right schools, and the right classes. What kind of skills do you find to be critical for us to instill in our children, regardless of their post-high school plans?
Making sure our kids are prepared to succeed in school and beyond isn’t just about academics, but also about preparing them to navigate the transition from high school to college successfully. Here, we’ll talk about what constitutes the college gap and how you can help your kids bridge it with college prep activities that improve study skills, time management, and memory recall. Here are some things to consider as you listen to this episode:
Setting Them Up For Success - Boost Your Kid’s Study Skills. The foundation of college success is built upon good study skills and is something we can be teaching our kids at an early age. Whether it’s learning how to manage their time effectively, memorizing their class notes, or mastering test-taking techniques and exam preparation—the earlier we begin teaching these essential skills, the easier and smoother their transition will be from high school into college life.
Getting Them Ready For Adolescence: Start Early, Build a Strong Foundation and Encourage Creative Thinking. Some parents put off giving their children study skills until they reach high school – by then it’s often too late. The longer you wait, the harder it is for kids to change entrenched habits of procrastination and disorganization. It’s important to begin developing habits of good study behavior early so that these skills become second nature during high school.
Helping Them Manage Their Time: Parents often forget that their kids have a life outside of school and extracurricular activities. It’s important that your child understands how to manage time effectively if they want their workloads, schoolwork, extracurricular activities, family time, and social life to balance properly. One way you can do that is by helping them develop study skills. The following are some tips and tricks students should learn in order to maximize their learning potential throughout high school.Research Papers Are Often Too Long/Too Wordy: Teachers should specify page length; but more importantly, students need to understand that research papers aren’t supposed to be a wiki-type experience where hundreds of sources are quoted verbatim with no analysis or commentary.
Providing Support on the Home Front: Tips on how to keep supporting your child even after you've given them all of your advice. Provide some tips on what parents can do to help their children through tough times, even when they’re not there with them. Be sure that everything you say is positive and encouraging.

Black and Camping - The Couple that Glamps Together, Stays Together
Friday Dec 17, 2021
Friday Dec 17, 2021
Black couples are increasingly looking towards the great outdoors to relax and spend time together, and so are other individuals who love nature and value privacy. With that in mind, it’s always important to consider the safety and comfort of yourself and your partner when getting ready to go camping as a black couple. Luckily, there are plenty of solutions that will make your trip to nature more comfortable than ever before! Here are some tips on how to prepare yourself, mentally and physically, for camping as a black couple.
Be PreparedThe most important tip is to be prepared. This includes packing enough food and water, clothes, camping supplies and other camping essentials in order to stay safe and comfortable. When it comes to safety, you want to be sure that you are well-prepared when venturing into unfamiliar territory. It’s also good to make sure that your campsite is off of public land so no strangers will disturb your peace during your trip.
Familiarize Yourself With the AreaWhether you’re camping near your home, or in an area you’ve never visited before, it’s important to familiarize yourself with your surroundings. Many popular camping destinations have local sites that feature discounts on supplies and food. You should be aware of these options beforehand so that you don’t find yourself paying more than necessary. It also helps to research where each site is located in order to plan out your route accordingly.
Dress AppropriatelyIn general, darker colors absorb more heat, so if you’re going to wear black, choose lightweight materials that can breathe (polyester or rayon are good options). You might also want to invest in some high-quality sunscreen—and not just because you’ll look cool. Although skin pigment helps protect against UV rays from damaging DNA within your skin cells, certain sections of your body (including your lips and ears) aren’t protected by melanin and are therefore more vulnerable.
Talk About ItWe all know that camping with your significant other is one of many amazing things that can bring you two closer together. As a black couple, however, there may be some additional challenges and questions you’ll want to discuss before heading out on your next big trip.
Observe Environmental EtiquetteYou’re not in your own backyard or in a tree house. While camping is one of our favorite activities, it can be quite disruptive to those around you if you’re unprepared. Observe environmental etiquette by showing respect to others who may be at campsites around you and be mindful of your surroundings.
