Tween Entrepreneurs Can Teach You a Thing or Three!
Friday Oct 01, 2021
Friday Oct 01, 2021
How can we empower our youth to follow their dreams in a safe and effective way? In a world with limitless opportunities, it is never too early to talk to your kids about their options. In today’s episode, host DJ D-Rich invites two young and ambitious business owners to discuss what entrepreneurship means to them.
Tween entrepreneurs Ziyad of Ziyad Creations and Keeley of Siimply_Editz began their entrepreneurial journeys at a young age. They both agree that owning a business allows you to do what you love while providing you with a better future. Growing up in a digital age, the two understand the potential impact that a business can have on a global scale.
Ziyad seeks to make an impact through language, which is why he is currently studying French. He encourages other kids to learn another language, so they can sell their products to someone in a different country. For Keeley, she prefers to spread the word about her designs through TikTok. She explains that this platform provides an easy and free way to connect and share your talents with people all over the globe! Even though building a business takes time, Ziyad and Keeley are teaching themselves valuable skills that they will carry with them as they transition into adulthood.
You are never too young to pursue your passion. Tune into this week’s tween edition of Southern Soul Live Stream to hear about the future of entrepreneurship through the eyes of our youngest generation and learn more from industry experts on how to encourage AND protect your children’s goals in a rapidly advancing world.
Quotes
• “For example, being a cashier you don't make a lot of money. But starting your own business, you might be able to make more money than a cashier would. But you have to start off with the little steps.” (12:17-12:32 | Ziyad)
• “But it's very important to know another language, not just English, while starting a business because for example, say you want to go to a different country or a different continent to sell your product. They won't know what you're saying, most likely, and you won’t know what they're saying.” (14:04-14:29 | Ziyad)
• “Tik Tok is just really good to grow your business because a lot of people can see it all around the world.” (19:16-19:20 | Keeley)
• “Entrepreneurship is important to me because it shows me how I need to plan out my future.” (21:19-21:26 | Keeley)

What My Eyes Have Seen featuring Pioneer Educator, Mrs. Bonnie Bracey-Sutton
Friday Sep 24, 2021
Friday Sep 24, 2021
Mrs. Bonnie Bracey-Sutton recognized early on in her teaching career that the town she grew up in had not offered students the level of support they needed to thrive. This realization inspired her to implement change in the education system. Two decades of diverse experiences taught her how to pioneer creativity in the classroom to bring high-quality education to each of her students. Mrs. Bonnie’s success in the educational world has earned her many awards, an induction to the Alexandra African American Hall of Fame, and appointments to exclusive committees by both President Bill Clinton and Star Wars legend George Lucas. In today’s episode, host DJ D-Rich sits down with Mrs. Bonnie to discuss the evolution of teaching in America.
Early on in her career, Mrs. Bonnie’s experience teaching in a German school developed her into the teacher she is today. Working with no resources, no supervision and a diverse group of international students forced her to get creative and think quickly on her feet. When Mrs. Bonnie came back to the US, she became one of the first teachers to promote the use of the internet in the classroom. Despite the backlash she continuously received from parents, other teachers and administrators, she never stopped fighting to better the American education system.
According to Mrs. Bonnie, it doesn't take much to be an innovative educator. It just requires a little creativity. Tune into this week’s episode of Southern Soul Live Stream to hear about Mrs. Bonnie’s journey as an educator. Learn more about the role that technology played in her career and how you can evolve your teaching techniques to better educate America’s youth.
Quotes
• “It was just a community effort to change things.” (12:33-12:36)
• “And then I found out, I didn’t have to buy stuff because if I connected with the museum, I could use their stuff. So I learned to use museums as a learning place.” (16:19-16:27)
• “If you taught special ed, and if you taught gifted and talented, you could pretty much make your own program.” (18:48-18:55)
• “I learned that the kids who memorize stuff and blurt it out are not the smartest kids in your class, so I learned to pay attention to the ones that didn't say very much.” (23:10-23:22)
• “The vendorization has two parts. One is when they started making mandates that every kid had to pass a test at certain times, and you know they're not cookies. Even when you put cookies in the oven, they don’t all brown the same way.” (26:32-26:49)
• “What I really want the audience to understand is the history of education in America. In addition, in the age of technology, teaching needs to evolve, teachers need to evolve and parents need to understand the possibilities.” (01:18:42-01:19:01)

Darius Quarles has been fascinated with art since he was five years old. Growing up on his grandparent’s farm, he found himself interpreting his visions of the world through sketching. Since childhood, Darius has lived all over the world, started a family, and even found himself in some legal trouble. But no matter the circumstances, Darius has always fallen back on his love for art. Today, Darius is the proud owner of Virginia Henry’s, an art gallery, where he shares his life experiences as a black man through modern expressionist art.
Early on in life, Darius’s struggle to effectively communicate his feelings caused him to suffer consequences in his relationships with himself and others. After settling down in Durham, NC, Darius dedicated the next 21 years to becoming the ambassador of his own life. Over the years, his passion for art has blessed him with opportunities to evolve into the person he is today: an active member of the community, a devoted artist, and a loving father.
There is nothing in life quite like finding your passion. Tune into this week’s episode of Southern Soul Live Stream to hear Darius interpret some of his favorite pieces and learn more about the power of art to bring experience, emotion and culture to life.

The Black Maternal Health Crisis with Dr. Mary E. Fleming
Friday Sep 10, 2021
Friday Sep 10, 2021
In recent years, the topic of maternal mortality has been widely covered in the news. America is known for being an affluent country with some of the best medical resources and advancements, yet we are consistently ranked poorly when it comes to maternal and infant mortality. The numbers across the board are bleak, but for black and brown women, they are utterly devastating. In today’s episode, host DJ D-Rich is joined in conversation with Dr. Mary E. Fleming to discuss the maternal health care crisis in America and what is being done to bring health equity to women across the states.
When it comes to health disparities and inequities, it is important to understand that the care we receive in medical facilities only plays a small role in what affects our everyday health. If we want to bridge the gaps in our healthcare systems, we simply cannot treat every patient the same. Dr. Mary E. Fleming explains that before determining the route of care, health care providers need to consider several other factors, such as where the patient lives, how accessible fresh food is, and their modes of transportation, just to name a few.
In addition, the medical field has a long and grueling history of providing inefficient care to people of color. The generational trauma that has resulted from this systemic inequity often prevents people of color from achieving good health. When the human body is exposed to the stress of everyday racism, it weakens one’s chances of survival. Dr. Mary E. Fleming suggests that this puts black women at inherent risk for complications before, during, and even after pregnancy.
Dr. Mary E. Fleming and many other physicians are fighting to close the gaps in healthcare disparities and provide better medical experiences for black women in America and around the globe. Tune into this week’s episode of the Southern Soul Podcast for a conversation about the black maternal crisis. Learn more about the challenges women of color experience in early motherhood and get answers to commonly asked questions from a medical expert herself!
Quotes
• “You think of the US as this very affluent country with all of these medical resources and access to care, and you wouldn't think that we would be at the bottom of the list on the health outcome platform. But maternal mortality is one of those which, across the board, we are at the bottom of the list, and for black and brown women, it's even worse.” (13:16-13:29)
• “When there are any health inequities, everybody's health suffers. It's not just the disadvantaged population, it is the whole population.” (15:15-15:23)
• “Even for black women who have a great job, went to school, go to prenatal care, do everything they're supposed to do, their rates of dying are still higher, and much higher than white women with a high school education.” (18:17-18:33)
• “All the health disparities didn't just happen. It isn’t something that just happened five years or ten years ago. This is historical because of the American way. And there are lots of policies in place that we don't even think about on an everyday basis that affect our health outcomes.” (22:08-22:25)

Navigating the Complex Landscape of Child Custody with Attorney Kevin Jones
Friday Sep 03, 2021
Friday Sep 03, 2021
As the oldest of five children growing up in inner city Detroit, Attorney Kevin Jones learned early on how to defend and protect his siblings from the harsh outside world. It is this passion for defending others that sparked his interest in becoming an attorney. Throughout his legal career, Kevin has made it his mission to ensure that he properly informs clients of their rights and responsibly guides them through complex legal issues. In today’s episode, your host DJ D-Rich is joined in conversation with Kevin Jones, divorce and family lawyer, to discuss how fathers can better navigate the complications of a child custody case.
If there was one thing Kevin would tell anybody, it’s that hurt feelings should never be the driving force behind your child custody case. He strongly suggests processing these emotions and feelings prior to seeking custody. Neither your lawyer nor the judge feels the way you do about the mother of your child, and they are trained to sense motivating factors. Kevin warns that by bringing anger, resentment or any other negative emotion into a courtroom, you run the risk of consequences such as a loss of time, money and potentially custody.
Kevin would advise any father battling for custody to keep trying and never give up. When it comes time to face a judge, they will make their decision based on the best interest of the child. Therefore, it is important that you do everything in your power to demonstrate effort before you go to court. Kevin explains that you can build credibility as a father by taking a parenting class, paying child support and showing up for your child as much as you can because you can never get that time back.
Having a divided family is never easy, but at the end of the day, it is important to remember that the well-being of your child comes first. Join your host and Attorney Kevin Jones on this week’s episode of Southern Soul Live Stream to learn how to overcome the adversities of a child custody case, so you can win more time with your kid and be the best father you can be.
Quotes
• “The biggest lesson that I learned and I've carried forth in my practice is that I have a duty and a responsibility to give back and not just focus on my selfish needs.” (05:49-05:56)
• “I see that so often fathers don't have the knowledge that's truly necessary to establish and build those connections. It's not like they don't want to or they don’t have a desire to, but for whatever reason, they haven't been able to make that connection.” (11:44-12:05)
•“The judge presiding over your case does not share the same feelings you have about the other parent….If you take past hurts and scars into the courtroom with you, a judge is likely question whether you really have the child’s best interest in mind.” (14:41-15:01)
• “You have to realize that the anger and the hurt feelings that came from that relationship cannot be the driving force behind you seeking custody of your child.” (15:17-15:34)
• “You gotta keep trying. Don't let that time go by because that time that you're missing with your child, you can't make that up.” (30:36-30:46)

“Toxic politics, social unrest and the pandemic have affected us all, but mental health care is available and effective,” says host DJ D-Rich. In today’s episode, your host is joined by Aisha Moore, Self-Care Expert, and Tysha Pressley, Lead Therapist at Rehabilitate Your Life, to discuss manageable solutions to mental wellness during the pandemic and beyond.
As a black woman, Aisha Moore always felt as though the pressure of the world was on her back. Between managing her job, social life and being an active member of her community, she never knew a life that didn't involve stress. It wasn't until she experienced a string of panic attacks that she took a step back and reevaluated her life. Aisha came to the conclusion that stress had become so ingrained in her everyday routine that she had become addicted to living an unmanageable lifestyle. For anyone looking to destress, Aisha explains that it's important to first acknowledge your unhealthy relationship with stress, and to then find comfort with resting and putting yourself first.
For Tysha Pressley, the pandemic has given her more clients than her books can handle. According to her, we are programmed to be “human doings” rather than human beings. The pandemic has stripped most Americans of their daily distractions and has forced many people to realize the true state of their mental health. Tysha wants listeners to know that seeking help does not make you weak, and she would encourage anyone who feels internal conflict to consider therapy.
We all know the struggle is real, so join us on today’s episode of the Southern Soul Podcast for an honest conversation about stress management and mental health. Get answers to commonly asked mental health questions, tips on how to live stress-free, and learn how to master mindfulness so you can improve your overall well-being.
Quotes
• “Not being stressed feels vulnerable, it feels naked, it feels weird, because the thing that we say we don't want is to be super stressed. But we're so used to it that not being stressed just feels odd. So we do things to self sabotage and put that stress back on.” (17:04-17:24)
• “It's a lot of rehabilitating your life when you grow up in dysfunction and trauma. It really does affect your life overall, and it can really devastate your life if you're not really mindful.” (27:51-28:03)
• “It's really important to make sure that you're putting yourself first. I love that people are coming in so they can learn the skills that they need in order to put themselves first and manage their own mental health.” (41:03-41:14)
• “You have to know who to go to for the right things, and it's not always the people you love. Sometimes it's the stranger, sometimes, it's people who you don't expect but that doesn't mean those people don't have value.” (01:19:02-01:19:13)

What Men Really Want: Part I ”Relationships and Dating”
Friday Aug 20, 2021
Friday Aug 20, 2021
In the midst of this year’s social and political turbulence, we at Southern Soul Live Stream recognize the need to recalibrate and communicate the goals and desires of Black men. In today’s episode, host DJ D-Rich invites a diverse group of panelists to dispel myths, confront biases, and speak their truths on relationships and dating. The main question? What do women need to know about the men they love?
Most women would say that men are complicated despite the hard exterior they often portray. One of the biggest questions the women on our podcast have is: What does it take to get a man to be emotionally available? From the men’s perspective, some of the key attributes necessary for any successful relationship are readiness, appreciation and flexibility; however, the reality is that a definitive answer does not exist. Every relationship is unique, and as we are continuously adapting and evolving, it is most important to consistently put in the work and express love to your partner through their love language.
Whether you are single, married, divorced or separated, today’s show holds wisdom for everyone. Join your host DJ D-Rich for a jam-packed episode of the Southern Soul Live Stream podcast. Enjoy poetry from some of our favorite creatives and learn more about the realities of dating and relationships through the perspectives of Black men.
Quotes
• “Being a poet and a lover of arts, I don't want someone who is bland and has no layers. I have no issue with you being complex. But the issue comes when you feel like you can't share your layers with me, where you're afraid to tell your truth or be intimate with me emotionally.” (11:06- 11:23)
• “You just have to have some ability to assess whether you and the other person are ready. You know, be mature enough and be selfless enough to think about somebody else. Know who you are! There's some real stuff around careers, income, money, children and baby daddies. All that stuff has to be assessed to see whether you're prepared and equipped to be in a relationship. And then you guys see if you really want it. (34:41-35:04)
• “A lot of times people will try to do what seems like love for them, but that may not communicate love to somebody else...and that's where the conflicts begin and when people start feeling unappreciated and unloved.” (41:04- 41:14)
• “Loving me and valuing me are two different things. If you value me, then you're going to put in the work, and if I value you, I'm going to put in the work.” (45:55- 46:02)

Love Iguehi! – ”Building a Fashion Brand that Represents Me!”

Love Iguehi Discount Coupon Code "SouthernSoul"
“I’m a lover. I love people, and I want people to feel love when they experience Love Iguehi,” says Iguehi James, owner of and chief designer at Love Iguehi. Iguehi explains that she has poured her heart and soul into her brand and wants her pieces to reflect her purest self. She tries to embody love in every aspect of her life, and she hopes that her designs will do the same.
Iguehi’s company started out as a hobby, which turned into a side hustle, which turned into a full-time gig. Iguehi handpicks African Ankara prints and then uses them to design custom pieces that showcase her Oakland roots and Nigerian heritage. Iguehi explains that how you look critically affects how you feel. As such, she creates pieces that she hopes will make people excited about getting dressed in the morning, so they can begin their days with joy and confidence.
Tune into this week’s throwback episode of Southern Soul Live Stream to hear more about how Iguehi built a fashion brand that represents her most authentic self. Learn about how Iguehi went from sewing a skirt to launching a major brand, how she has been able to juggle her roles as a mom, wife and designer, and how she has stayed true to herself and her message throughout her entrepreneurial journey.
Quotes
• “What I've done is basically created a business out of what was a side hustle, which was a hobby.” (4:52-5:00)
• “What I do is create pieces, contemporary pieces, using African fabrics, in ways that will connect people back to the African continent, but also highlight the beauty of women, the beauty of men, and really make people get excited about getting dressed.” (5:59-6:20)
• “I think that there is a lot of truth to being intentional about giving your brand a voice and being intentional about how people receive what your brand is….I’m a lover, I love people. And I want people to feel love when they experience Love Iguehi.” (15:11-15:43)
• “I really suffered from imposter syndrome at the beginning. I had a really hard time calling myself a designer because at the beginning, I only made one product, and that was a skirt. And so people were like, ‘Oh, you're you're the designer?’ and I'm like, ‘Well, I make a skirt.’ And I would just leave it at that.” (18:12-18:30)
• “I do feel like there's a lot of freedom that can come with being your own boss, but there's a lot of responsibility that comes with that as well.” (27:06-27:14)
• “If you guys don't see the inequity between what is happening for us as black designers versus our white counterparts, and you don't see how this is wrong, then you're just blind to the issue at hand.” (37:20-37:31)
• “I think as parents, as aunts, as friends, we have to really hear our kids and say, ‘What resources are there that are going to help develop these interests that my kids have,’ because as long as we dismiss them, they won't see the importance of it.” (40:48-41:08)
