“Seventy percent of people experience trauma at some point in their lives,” says Reggie D. Ford. Like many others in his East Nashville neighborhood, Reggie could have been a victim of the streets. While crime, violence and poverty were second nature for many, Reggie knew in his heart he was destined for more. After graduating from Vanderbilt University, Reggie went on to open his own business, RoseCrete Wealth Management, and write a book titled PTSD: Perseverance Through Severe Dysfunction in which he re-examines the black experience in America.
To get through traumatic experiences, most people make the mistake of normalizing their trauma. When they do this, they turn a blind-eye to the problem and allow for the cycle of abuse to continue. For most of his life, Reggie lived this way. It wasn’t until the year when Reggie hit rock bottom that he began to truly understand the importance of mental health. Along his healing journey, Reggie had to understand trauma on both personal and generational levels. Knowing where his trauma was originating was the key to jumpstarting the healing process and beginning to break his generational trauma.
Tune into this week’s episode of Southern Soul Live Stream for a raw conversion about perseverance. Learn more about Reggie’s definition of PTSD and why mental health and wealth management are the keys to breaking the curse of generational trauma and poverty.
Quotes

• “I had to recognize that a lot of the trauma that I faced was placed on me by those who came before me: my parents, my grandparents, those in my family that were older than me. And then in my healing process, I began to learn and understand what their traumas were.” (11:49-12:07)
• “When money is such a pressing issue in the house, anything can trigger you.” (14:19-14:23)
• “‘You can't control what's out of your control’ was something that my mom used to instill in me. It built up and helped to restore my confidence.” (22:01-22:12)
• “When you are in a traumatic environment, you normalize it and that becomes a defense mechanism just to keep pushing through it. But when you're removed from it and it’s reintroduced, that's when you start to feel negative effects.” (25:43-25:57)
• “I finally realized that my mental health had to be a priority for me or else I could not be productive, helpful or beneficial in any other aspect of my life.” (34:24-34:34)

“Emotional wellness is a gift from God, but we've never been invited to take a deep look at it,” says Margaret L. Conley. Growing up in the church, Margaret couldn’t help but notice the overt gaps between faith and mental health. For the last decade, Margaret has worked in ministry focusing on the black church in the context of faith-based trauma. Margaret is both the owner and lead consultant at MLC Consulting, LLC where she serves adverse populations at the intersection of spirituality and emotional wellness. In today’s episode, Margaret takes a deep dive into emotional wellness and the future of the black church.
In the Bible, Paul teaches us to understand that we are made of many members. To start the healing process, Margaret explains that we need to first understand all of the parts that make us a cohesive whole. Just because we may be well-adjusted in one area doesn’t mean we don’t need to give attention somewhere else. When we bring our spiritual and emotional wellness into alignment, we allow our wounds to heal; and when we come from a space of healing, the black church will survive.
Tune into this week’s episode of Southern Soul Live Stream for a conversation about faith-based trauma. Learn more about how individual healing has the power to transcend generational traumas and heal broken communities and churches.
Quotes
• “In regard to the church, we've never been invited to take a deep look at our emotional wellness.” (12:31-12:38)
• “If we can rightly divide the text of the Bible, we will find that we are offered care by God, but humanity is who we need to connect to.” (20:15-20:24)
• “Faith-based trauma is any traumatic event that has happened based upon your faith tradition.” (23:53-23:59)
• “We need to be sensitive about trauma, so that we can start to see our churches and faith-based spaces heal.” (26:09-26:16)
• “Cast your cares upon God because God cares about that. Do not cast your care upon your pastor, because your pastor may not care about that.” (34:28-34:37)
• “I don't think the black church is dead. I think she will die if we don't start to take care of her physically, emotionally, and socially. If we don't start to take care of the black church in the totality of that, then we are giving her permission to die. I don't think the black church, in essence, wants to go. It's still a safe haven, in my opinion, it's still a place where we go. But we have become so sick in the need to be great that we've missed the reason for the formation of the black church.” (39:12-39:51)
• “If the black church can remember why she was formed, she won't die because she will remember that she was created to heal. She is the only entity in the world that will take anybody and she's the only entity in the world that will allow anybody to heal. She is like the Good Samaritan, everybody will walk over that hurt person but the black church. She will do what she can to process and begin the healing space.” (40:01-40:29)
• “If we can find a way to maneuver the church into a space where we are able to take care of our physical, emotional, social, and spiritual health, and know that these are parts of us that need to be taken care of, then the black church will not only survive, but she will begin to thrive and move beyond anything that people have designed for her to fail.” (43:15-43:38)

Dr. Cherlisa Jackson has served clients in psychiatric care for over 13 years and has spent the last six specializing in psychosexual therapy. Knowing that the black community is disproportionately affected by STIs and all other sexual traumas, Dr. Cherlisa became inspired to open her own practice S.h.e.e.r. (Sexual Health Education, Esteem, & Relationships) where she helps couples and families increase their confidence and strengthen their relationships.
According to Dr. Cherlisa, it is crucial to establish boundaries before getting into a relationship. Rather than getting caught up in all of the things that you want, it is more important to first understand what you do not want. When we are honest with ourselves and understand our deal breakers, we are more likely to make productive decisions.
Tune into this week’s episode of Southern Soul Stream Live for a raw conversation with Dr. Cherlisa Jackson about sex and relationships. Learn more about the difference between chemistry and compatibility, the importance of honest communication, and how to make informed decisions that foster transparent and healthy relationships.
Quotes
• “I think honesty is probably the best thing. Communicate from the beginning and be flat out honest about what you actually want within somebody you're talking to.” (09:02-09:11)
• “When you skip that friendship step, you miss a lot of the compatibility stuff and you go straight into chemistry.” (11:13-11:19)
• “As a couple, you’ve got to be able to think together and people don't know how to do that if they skip being able to be compatible.” (14:12-14:17)
• “African American people are disproportionately affected by all things sex.” (15:33-15:36)
• “When it comes to why we are not protecting ourselves, most of the research shows that condoms look suspicious or break the mood and people aren't interested in doing that because they want to build trust. So when you take away protection, it's like a means of building trust.” (15:49-16:02)
• “The minute I pile someone else on top of my hurt and I don't work to filter through it or heal it, then it just becomes a bigger problem for the person I'm currently getting over.” (20:03-20:13)
• “You have to start with what you don't want so that you understand your boundaries, deal breakers, and what you're not willing to accept.” (32:31-32:39)
• “We see all these memes running around about red flags, and it's all because we don't establish deal breakers.” (32:58-33:04)

Have you ever wondered about the trials and tribulations of publishing your own book? Experts Dr. Robert L. Shepard, Dr. Daryl D. Green and Kaci Diane share their background in writing, publishing, and finding their artistic voices. They provide insights on the most important lessons learned while publishing their own pieces of writing and how they successfully landed their dream jobs.
Kaci Diane, self-publishing expert, shares her experience becoming comfortable with her artistic voice. She explains the importance of authenticity as the foundation of her writing. People can feel when someone is being honest and sincere, as it makes your words easier to connect with. Kaci explains how this concept will always be a staple in her work and encourages other writers to trust the process in their own genuinity.
Dr. Daryl D. Green, an internationally acknowledged author and researcher, and Dr. Robert Louis Shepard, motivational speaker and writer, discuss the word “reposition.” Dr. Shepard defines reposition as taking something and moving it from where it once was to somewhere else. This word symbolizes a change in one's life, and specifically in Dr. Shepard's life, a much-needed career change. Dr. Green resonates with reposition because he does not see retiring as an option for him, so he must reposition his lifestyle to fit around this new discovery. These two doctors encourage young writers and students to consider repositioning as a positive term that they can use to create more meaningful lives.
Tune into this week’s episode of Southern Soul Live Stream to hear from Dr. Daryl D. Green, Dr. Robert L. Shepard, and Kaci Diane about discovering your fulfilling career path. Learn more about life after retirement, the brilliance behind authentically written books, and educating youth on how to land their dream job.
Quotes
• “Publishing makes you kind of go through things with a fine comb and say, okay, what is useful for others? Like, what is best to share? And what is the best way to do that? What is the best way to tell the story that you're trying to tell?” (03:44-03:51 | Kaci Diane)
• “The first time I read a poem, I was so sad. I was like, this is life. And life is hard. And I was just a hot mess on the stage. And people were hugging me. And I'm like, I'm never not going to come back. I'm always going to be here, y'all are my people now.” (06:00-06:13 | Kaci Diane)
• “Reposition means that you just take something and move it from where it once was to somewhere else. That's exactly what I did. I moved myself from running an organization that I had formed. I had a staff. I had a payroll. I had an office, I had a lease and all of those things. And what I repositioned, I dropped that and just slid right over into the new things that are continually advocating for historically black colleges and universities.” (29:06-29:42 | Dr. Robert L. Shepard)
• “I think writing a book is one of the ways you become an expert instantaneously because people still have a fantasy and respect for authors.” (35:21-35:30 | Dr. Daryl D. Green)
• “Every African American that I know, every black person I know, they should have a tight relationship with God, they should have a personal relationship with God. Because God said, ‘I'm never going to leave you nor forsake you.’ And then he means that it's not about your pension plan. It's not about this. It's not about that. It's about your relationship with God. And if you maintain that, he's going to sustain you over your lifetime.” (1:09:18-1:09:43 | Dr. Robert L. Shepard)

In a predominately white industry, black wine lovers have often found it difficult to find inclusion in the business. While there are some popular black-owned wines, they only account for 1% of all existing companies. After discovering their own passions for wine, Ashley Rawlinson, Founder of HERitage Wines, and Shayla Varnado, Founder of Black Girls Wine & Society, became inspired to break these societal barriers by designing businesses that are rooted in black culture, femininity, and wine education.
Growing up as black women, neither Ashley nor Shayla had experience drinking wine. It wasn’t until they were introduced to it later in life that they realized how powerful the experience can be. Not only is wine diverse in flavor, but the women have also shared some of their favorite memories over a bottle of wine with their girlfriends. In order to show your support, Ashley and Shayla tell listeners to request black-owned wines from your local stores. Regardless of societal standards, it is important that people of color feel included in the wine industry.
Tune into this week’s episode of Southern Soul Live Stream to learn more about the community aspect of wine, the importance of supporting black-owned businesses, and how entrepreneurs like Ashley and Shayla are creating a new industry that is inclusive to all.
Quotes
• “People go where they're welcome. If I don't see anyone reflective of me in your staff or in your audience then what reason do I have to then patronize the business? Because it doesn't look as if I am welcome or people who look like me even frequent this space.” (07:08-07:24 | Shayla)
• “In the grand scheme of things is not a lot when you have thousands of winemakers out there, but there's over a hundred Black-owned wine brands in the industry.” (10:11-10:22 Shayla)
• “Wine is not something culturally in the African American community that we are educated on or exposed to as young children.” (13:30-13:39 | Shayla)
• “Black-owned wines are not different. They may have had a harder struggle or a longer journey to get where they are, but their wines are amazing and just as good.” (26:15-26:25 | Ashley)
• “As consumers, we need to go ask for Black-owned wines, and not just on Black History Month.” (26:33-26:37 | Ashley)
• “I make sure that I send my guests home with a black owned wine they can try themselves. That’s a way I can expose them to something different.” (28:22-28:30 | Ashley)
• “As your palate matures, you will start to grow an appreciation for drier and various styles of wine. It just takes time.” (35:55-36:05 | Shayla)
• “Wine is the perfect icebreaker and the perfect connector regardless of who it is or where they’re from.” (40:29-40:34 | Shayla)

Otto D'Agnolo is a recording engineer who has spent over 40 years of his life in the music business. He began his career in the music industry as a performer and then went on to become a recording engineer. Otto has had the pleasure of working with singers like Glen Campbell, Waylon Jennings, Billy Preston, American Idol winner Jordin Sparks, Kenny Rogers, and countless others. His work has also been featured on popular television shows such as The Jersey Shore, The Office, One Tree Hill and more. Otto’s hard work has even earned him an Emmy Award for songwriting! On today’s episode, Otto educates listeners about the important lessons he wishes he had known when starting out in the music industry.
Otto describes how great music is made. It starts with a catchy melody that sticks in your head, then a lyrical hook is added, and the rest falls into place to create an engaging and beautiful song. However, because of the way music is consumed today, artists only get about two to three seconds to engage the listener. Especially when listeners are impatiently looking for new music that resonates with their musical taste, they tend to skip songs at lightning speed. Otto explains that it is crucial to grab the listener right away, because if you intrigue them for the first two bars, they will stick around for four bars, eight bars, until they have given the song a thorough listen. Otto says that it is extremely important to do something groovy or unexpected in the first few bars to try and hook that audience, and from there, the listeners can decide if they like the song or not.
Tune into this week’s episode of Southern Soul Live Stream for a conversation with Otto D'Agnolo about the ins and outs of the recording industry. Learn more about how iTunes destroyed label branding, the power of TikTok on the music industry, and why having authority establishes trust for musicians. Then, check out Otto’s website linked below for an immersive musical experience!
Quotes
• “It's amazing how much more important it is to learn to listen well, before you try to play well.” (08:03-08:09)
• “I was so surprised to watch these three completely separate artists who've never crossed paths have that exact same process on the vocal microphone. I thought it was fascinating.” (11:51-12:02)
• “It's really learning to get the artists to let go of this wall they built around themselves to be safe, and to really try to get outside of what they've decided is their thing, because sometimes their thing is a lot bigger than they think it is. They just love that safe space that sounds great to them.” (19:28-19:38)
• “People don't trust you until they see the gold record on the wall, and then they listen to you.” (20:26-20:37)
• “What we found from polling our members is that it's not about the music. They love the process. They love the personalities. And I've got guys who have told me, ‘I would never have listened to this stuff. But now that I've watched you make it, I want to buy the record.’” (40:59-41:13)
• “I think that part of our problem, especially in this streaming world, is that we aren't listening to the album, so we're not getting the depth of artists. We’re listening to singles.” (1:04:36-1:04:44)

Money Management for Teens featuring Holly Reid Toodle, CPA
Friday Oct 29, 2021
Friday Oct 29, 2021
Growing up, Holly Reid Toodle learned everything from her parents except money management. After losing her first job due to the recession, Holly realized just how unprepared and uneducated she was when it came to managing her money. With no job, no savings, and a significant amount of debt, Holly had to dig her own way out of a financial hole. Today, Holly has used her personal experience to publish The Master Playbook, a guide that explains how to break the cycle of living paycheck to paycheck and achieve financial freedom.
Managing money is one of life’s most crucial skills, but many parents aren't teaching their children how to do it. According to Holly, this is because they weren’t taught how to do this either! In order to break cycles of poor financial habits, Holly says parents need to be talking to their children about money at an early age. Holly suggests being open to sharing your financial successes and failures with your kids and discussing ways in which they can avoid financial pitfalls.
Tune into this week’s episode of Southern Soul Live Stream for a conversation with Holly Reid Toodle about wealth management. Learn more about Holly’s personal story, the basic principles of saving and investing, and how communicating with your children about finances can help them attain a debt-free future.
Quotes
• “I was pretty much the epitome of young and successful. I was at the top of my game, I was living above my means, I was doing everything our America teaches us to do, which is to accumulate debt. I was accumulating debt, I was living high on the hog, I wasn't thinking about tomorrow, and then I got hit with a corporate layoff.” (06:49-07:20)
• “My wake up call was that I was so naive and so ill-prepared for the unexpected.” (08:34-08:39)
• “Here I am: an accounting major, graduated with honors, CPA, auditing million dollar fortune 500 companies, yet I couldn't manage my own personal finances.” (13:59-14:11)
• “You call it passion, I call it purpose. There's purpose behind my work. I've worked with a number of families and taught enough kids to see the impact. I am literally planting seeds and the seeds can be planted from many different places, not just me. It could be planted from people they looked up to, whether they're celebrities, books they read (where they're getting information from different perspectives), or financial educators like myself. But the main point of this is that it has to come from home, too. It's got to come from the parents. I tell my parents, they are their kids’ first financial advisor, and I know that money management may be an intimidating topic, especially if the parents aren't good at it.” (19:47-20:51)
• “A lot of adults aren't good at managing money because no one ever taught them how to do it or how to go about it. But here's the thing, whether you're good at it or bad at it, we all have experience with it.” (20:54-21:08)

Growing up as a gay man in a conservative community, Vic Sorrell knew firsthand what it felt like to be ostracized for being true to himself. Early on in his career, Vic landed a job that worked closely with the HIV crisis. After realizing that HIV disproportionately impacts people of color, Vic dedicated his life to Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI). Today, Vic works as an international holistic coach and is committed to educating people of all races, genders, religions and sexual orientations on how they can make a positive impact in their communities.
When we think about white supremacy, we tend to think of extremist groups. While these groups are rooted in racism, most people in America unconsciously participate in white supremacy. Even though many people are well-intentioned, their focus tends to be on their contribution rather than healing the issue itself. Vic defines this phenomenon as “nice racism,” and he explains that it does more harm than good. It is not enough just to be anti-racist; instead, you have to put in selfless work on an everyday basis. Whether it is through reading books or googling popular terms, Vic would tell anybody that is interested in being an ally that they need to do the research themselves.
It can take seven generations to dissipate trauma, so it is crucial now more than ever that we all band together to mend the gaps in our societies. Tune into this week’s episode of Southern Soul Live Stream to learn the real definition of white supremacy, how to leverage your privilege to instill change, and how literature became the catalyst of Vic’s journey to allyship.
Quotes
• “People who are white often focus more on their contribution – what they're doing out of the goodness of their hearts to help others who are somehow not the same as they see themselves. A lot of times when you're in that space and your focus is your contribution and what you're doing, instead of what you're learning and investing in yourself and your education, then what inevitably happens is you end up doing more harm than good. Because you get in certain spaces where you don't know how your mere presence as a white person is a trigger and a discomfort.” (12:12-13:19)
• “The dynamics around the inequities that relate to race in our country and in our world are so nuanced and so insidious that you could talk about multiple different scenarios on a daily basis the rest of your life and never never get them all.” (19:50-20:11)
• “All of us have been socialized in a society where white lives have continued to be, in many cases, more valued than black and brown lives.”(20:19-20:34)
• “It can take up to seven generations for some of the compounded trauma to dissipate.” (21:02-21:11)
• “We think white supremacy is extreme, right? [Extremist group] type behavior, that’s white supremacy. But in truth, white supremacy is simply the belief, whether conscious or unconscious, that whiteness is superior and is supreme.” (24:30-24:59)
• “White supremacy is so unconsciously dominant for most white people.”(27:40-27:47)

Creating Executive Presence with Arva Thomas, Public Speaking Coach
Friday Oct 15, 2021
Friday Oct 15, 2021
“I think you are able to connect with people better when you are maintaining your true self,” says Arva Thomas, CEO of Blue Monarch Communications LLC. As a professional corporate trainer and communication lover, Arva has never met a stage she didn't like or an audience whom she couldn't connect with. With more than 25 years of experience, Arva and her employees at Blue Monarch Communications strive to help their clients channel the best speaker and presenter within themselves.
After watching many corporate officials deliver presentations, Arva quickly realized there was a lack of effective communication in many companies. As someone who has always thrived in public speaking, Arva knew she could teach anyone how to create an executive level presence. Whether you’re in an interview or giving a presentation, delivery is key; and according to Arva, the best way to effectively deliver any message is by being yourself. Arva explains that by trying to be someone else, you are preventing your message from being fully conveyed.
Tune into this week’s episode of Southern Soul Live Stream for a conversation with Arva Thomas about the power of communication. Learn tips on how to overcome insecurities and confidently step into yourself so you can take your presentation, public speaking and communication skills to the next level.
Quotes
• “I eat, sleep and breathe developing curriculum, developing presentations, giving presentations and helping others to give presentations.” (05:39-05:50)
• “I am a lover of words. I love how sentence structure is put together with syntax and grammar. And studying in another language helps you to learn your own language better.” (06:05-06:15)
• “One of the things that my clients say is that they are always so surprised at how personalized the service is. They really feel that I genuinely care. (24:37-24:48)
• “I am very known for asking a lot of questions to anyone, and many of the people that know me would attest to that. But I take that and then tailor what I offer to meet those needs. It's always about what you want to get out of this and how can I help you to get there. So, I always start with the end in mind.” (25:26-25:58)
• “When you are delivering a speech, when you're delivering a presentation, or when you are in an interview for a job, delivery is very key. And I think the most important thing is to be yourself.” (29:11-29:24)
• “I think you are able to connect with people better when you are maintaining your true self.” (31:11-31:17)

Friday Oct 08, 2021

Before the COVID pandemic, remote schooling was uncharted territory. For many parents, in-person school seemed to normalize a hands-off approach to their children's learning. At the peak of the pandemic, school closures temporarily forced parents to take the lead on their children’s education. While adapting to virtual learning has come with its challenges, it has also shed light on the importance of parental presence in academia. Today, host D-Rich is joined in conversation with five parent/educator panelists to discuss how to give children the education they deserve.
For those parents who have been homeschooling their kids this year, it has been all too easy to distinguish flaws in the school systems. Coming to this disappointing realization, many are eager to step into their roles as their children’s advocate, but are unsure of how to help. As a parent, the best way to ensure that your child gets the most out of their education is to be actively involved. Communicate regularly with teachers, volunteer in after-school sports programs, or make sure that your child is completing all their assignments. However you choose to show your support, it is important to maintain proximity to your child’s education all the way through adulthood.

Quotes
• “We’ve heard the popularized term ‘learning loss’ but nobody is popularizing the term ‘learning gain.’ But I think the five of us know that students have probably learned and gained more than they’ve lost.” (23:34-23:56 | Dr. Rudy Jackson Jr.)
• “The pandemic truly showed where our schools are lagging and what schools are thriving. And that is what a lot of parents opened their eyes up to. I can’t tell you how many parents have inboxed me on the daily asking me ‘what do you do to find schools? Because this isn’t working for me.’” (30:39-03:57 | Cydnie Randolph)
• “Check up on them, verify, and make sure they're doing what they said they did. Go to the avenues that the teacher has provided for you because my daughters go to an awesome school and the teachers set up the program, from A to B the kids knew exactly where to go. So always ask them ‘what did you do today?’ And they can’t say they did nothing because they always have something to do.”(34:23-34:49 | Amire Billups)
• “What I realized is that the issue is that leadership and the vast majority of the educators don’t live in the community so in some sense they don’t see the value of the people in the community. So when scenarios come about parental and community involvement is the key to doing it better. Now you see schools with more community and parental liaison. And they are there because a lot of people see what parental voice and involvement does for schools in more affluent communities and they want the same type of opportunities for their children. (01:27:53-01:28:44 | Yoofi Dowell)
• “ So many parents stop communicating and stop being involved once their child hits high school because they think they don’t have to do anything else. But that’s the most important time because now your child is on their way out to being an adult without having the support. So I think it’s important to make sure that you can teach your child to be an advocate, but you're also an advocate for your child.” (01:33:44-01:34:26 | Lisa Rice)
